Best Map App for Korea: Naver Map, Kakao Map, Kakao T and Papago
The best map app for Korea is Naver Map, with Kakao Map as backup. Why Google Maps falls short, plus Kakao T, K.Ride and Papago set-up tips for visitors.

For most visitors, the best map app for Korea is Naver Map. Keep Kakao Map as a backup, use K.Ride or Kakao T to call taxis, and use Papago to translate. Google Maps is still useful for searching places and checking bus and subway routes. It does not give turn-by-turn walking or driving directions in Korea, though, so don't count on it as your only map.
This guide covers why Google Maps falls short here, how to set up each Korean app in English, what a Seoul taxi costs and the mistakes first-time visitors make most often. Prices and rules are as of November 4, 2026.
What is the best map app for Korea?
The quick answer, by task:
| Task | Best app | Backup | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking and transit directions | Naver Map | Kakao Map | Both show live bus and subway information |
| Driving | Naver Map or Kakao Map | Kakao Navi | Google Maps has no driving navigation in Korea |
| Calling a taxi | K.Ride (for visitors) | Kakao T | K.Ride takes overseas cards and has English menus |
| Translating menus, signs and chats | Papago | Google Translate | Papago is made by Naver |
| Finding reviews and photos | Naver Map | Kakao Map | Naver has a very large base of Korean user reviews |
Naver Map is Korea's most used map app by a wide margin. Mobile Index figures for April, reported by the Korea Herald in August 2026, put it at about 29.25 million monthly users. Kakao Map had about 12.77 million and Google Maps about 9.08 million. In June 2026, Naver said the app had more than 31 million monthly users. Visitors have their own complaints about Google Maps, too: in a 2024 Korea Tourism Organization survey cited by the Chosun Ilbo, it was the map app visitors were least satisfied with.
Why doesn't Google Maps work properly in Korea?
Korea restricts sending high-precision map data to servers abroad, citing national security. Google asked for permission in 2007 and in 2016 and was turned down both times. So in Korea, Google Maps shows places, reviews and public transport routes but no step-by-step navigation. On a transit route, the walking parts show only as a dotted line.

On February 27, 2026, the government gave conditional approval for Google to export 1:5,000-scale map data. Under the conditions, a Korean partner company processes the original data on servers in Korea, and the government reviews it before it leaves the country. Only the minimum needed for services such as navigation can be included, so sensitive data like contour lines is left out. Military and security sites must also be blurred in satellite imagery and Street View.
In August 2026, Google told the Korea Herald it plans to bring the full Google Maps service to Korea, including turn-by-turn navigation. It gave no launch date. As of November 4, 2026, walking and driving directions are still not available. Some Korean press reports in October said a full launch could come as early as the end of the year, while others pointed to early 2027. Google has not confirmed either.
What Google Maps does well in Korea:
- Searching place names in English and saving pins to your lists
- Bus and subway routes
- Reviews written by other visitors, often in English
Where it falls short:
- No turn-by-turn walking, cycling or driving navigation
- Listings for small local businesses can be thinner or less up to date than on the Korean apps
- Less help with station exits and underground passages
A practical approach: plan and save places in Google Maps at home, then navigate with Naver Map once you land. If Google switches on full navigation later, check what it offers before you travel.
How do I use Naver Map in English?
Naver Map works in four languages: Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese. It is free on iOS and Android.
- Install NAVER Map from your app store before you fly.
- Open it and allow location access.
- Open the app's settings and set the language to English. Menus and many place names then appear in English.
- Signing in with a Naver account lets you save places to lists, and that is worth doing if you are planning a full trip.
- To get directions, search for a place, tap Directions and choose transit, car, walking or bike.
Useful features once it is set up:
- Live transit: real-time arrival information for buses and subways, subway maps, and help with where to get on and off.
- Walking guidance: on June 19, 2026, Naver added real-time voice guidance to walking directions. It launched on Android first. Naver said iOS would follow but gave no date, so check whether your version has it.
- Reviews and photos: visitor reviews come with text, photos and videos, and Naver has added multilingual support for reviews and place filters. For anything long, paste it into Papago.
- Subway map: a network map for Seoul and other cities. For how fares and transfers work, see How to Ride the Seoul Subway: Lines, Transfers, Fares, Apps, Etiquette.
Tip: search in Korean when English fails
Naver's search works best with Korean names and addresses. If an English search finds nothing, copy the Korean name from the place's social media, your hotel booking or Google Maps and paste it in. Korean road addresses (for example 세종대로 110) are usually the most reliable search.
Is Kakao Map better than Naver Map?
Neither one is clearly better. Kakao Map is a strong second choice. It offers walking, transit, bike and driving directions, and some features stand out:
- Roadview: street-level photos that help you spot a small entrance or a basement bar before you arrive.
- Live bus information: bus locations and arrival times.
- Bike routes: handy if you ride Seoul's public bikes.
Its support for foreign languages is thinner than Naver's, so expect to see more Korean. Many residents keep both apps and cross-check. If one app shows a place as closed or missing, the other often has it.
How do I call a taxi in Korea with an app?
Kakao Mobility runs two taxi apps. Visitors usually find the newer one, K.Ride, easier.

K.Ride: built for visitors
Kakao Mobility launched K.Ride for foreign travelers in June 2024. You don't need a Kakao account: you can sign in with a phone number or with a Google, Apple or email account. You have to register and verify a credit card before you can book, and overseas cards work. Payment goes through the registered card, so you can't pay the driver in cash. The app's menus come in English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) and Japanese. You can search for destinations in more than 100 languages, and a built-in live translator helps you talk to the driver.
The catch is cost. K.Ride offers only Kakao's franchise and premium taxi types, not the regular taxis you can hail in Kakao T. The same trip also costs somewhat more than in Kakao T, because K.Ride adds a percentage-based service fee. Kakao Mobility has not said what the percentage is.
Kakao T: what locals use
Kakao T is the taxi app most people in Korea use. It also covers other services, such as designated drivers and parking. It comes in Korean and English, and it accepts overseas credit cards. It can also call a regular taxi. Sign-up needs a Kakao account, and visitors without a Korean phone number often get stuck at this step. If you can't get through sign-up, use K.Ride. If you live in Korea and have a local number, Kakao T is usually the cheaper choice.
How much does a taxi cost?
Seoul's standard (mid-size) taxi fares were last changed on February 1, 2023, and they still apply as of November 4, 2026:
| Item | Fare |
|---|---|
| Base fare (first 1.6 km) | 4,800 KRW |
| Distance charge | 100 KRW per 131 m |
| Time charge (when the taxi is moving slowly) | 100 KRW per 30 seconds |
| Late-night surcharge, 10–11 p.m. and 2–4 a.m. | +20% (base fare 5,800 KRW) |
| Late-night surcharge, 11 p.m.–2 a.m. | +40% (base fare 6,700 KRW) |
Deluxe and premium taxis cost more, and other cities set their own fares. Booking through an app can add a call fee or service fee, especially for franchise and premium taxis. Check the estimated fare before you confirm. If you are landing late at Incheon, compare your options in Incheon Airport to Seoul: AREX vs Airport Bus vs Taxi, Day and Night.
Is Papago better than Google Translate for Korean?
Many travelers and residents find Papago reads more naturally for Korean, though results vary and neither app is perfect. Papago is free and made by Naver.
- Languages: 14 in total: Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian and Arabic.
- Image translation: take a photo of a menu, sign or form and Papago translates the text in it.
- Voice and conversation modes: you speak a phrase and get the translation straight away, or you and a Korean speaker hold a two-way conversation, each in your own language.
- Offline: text translation works without an internet connection. Set it up on Wi-Fi before you need it.
- Extras: handwriting input, website translation and document translation.
Keep Google Translate as a second opinion. When the details really matter, such as an allergy or a rental contract, check the wording in both apps and keep your sentences short and simple.
Good to know
- Download everything before you fly. Installing apps, receiving verification texts and registering cards is much easier on hotel or home Wi-Fi than at an airport gate.
- Get data. Live transit times and taxi calls need a connection. An eSIM or local SIM is the simplest option, and pocket Wi-Fi works too.
- Note the exit number. Big stations can have many exits, and Naver Map tells you which one to use. The wrong exit can leave you on the wrong side of a busy road.
- Check the bus direction. Stops on opposite sides of a road often share a name. Check the next stop in the app before you get on.
- Have a transit card. The apps plan your route, but you still need a way to pay. See T-money Card Seoul Guide: Buy, Top Up and Use the Climate Card Too.
- Save your hotel address in Korean. You can show it to a driver or paste it into any app.
- Don't trust opening hours blindly. Small restaurants change their hours often, so check the shop's own social media as well.
FAQ
Does Google Maps work in Korea?
Partly. As of November 4, 2026, it finds places, shows reviews and gives bus and subway routes, but it has no turn-by-turn walking or driving navigation. The government conditionally approved a map data export in February 2026. Google says full navigation is coming but has not given a date.
Can I use Naver Map without a Korean phone number?
Yes, for everyday use. You can search for places, get directions and check transit in English. A Naver account is mainly useful for extras such as saving places to lists.
Can tourists use Kakao T?
Some can. Kakao T accepts overseas cards, but sign-up needs a Kakao account, which can be hard to set up without a Korean number. K.Ride, also from Kakao Mobility, is designed for visitors. You can sign in with a Google, Apple or email account, and it has English menus. It offers only premium taxi types, and prices are a little higher.
Which app should I download first for a trip to Korea?
Start with Naver Map and Papago. Then add K.Ride (or Kakao T if you have a Korean number) for taxis, and Kakao Map as a backup. Together these cover directions, translation and taxis for most trips.
Is Naver Map good for walking directions?
Yes. It is the most used map app in Korea, and in June 2026 it added real-time voice guidance to walking directions, starting on Android. Its walking directions also link up with transit, so it guides you to the stop and shows the next bus or train. In busy areas with underground passages, check which station exit it suggests so you don't take a long detour.
