Where to Stay in Seoul: Myeongdong vs Hongdae vs Gangnam and More
Where to stay in Seoul: Myeongdong, Hongdae, Insadong, Gangnam and Itaewon compared on price, airport links, noise and nightlife so you book the right base.

For most first-time visitors, the best answer to where to stay in Seoul is Myeongdong. It is central, two direct airport buses stop there, it is close to two subway lines, and it has the most hotels to choose from. Choose Hongdae for nightlife and cheaper beds, Insadong for palaces and quiet, traditional streets, Gangnam for business trips, upscale shopping and southern Seoul, and Itaewon for international food and bars.
Seoul covers a lot of ground. Hongdae in the west and Gangnam in the southeast are roughly 40 minutes apart by subway, so the area you pick decides how much of each day goes on travel. Below you'll find how each neighborhood works, what rooms cost right now, and the mistakes first-timers often make.

How much does a hotel in Seoul cost per night?
Rates change a lot by month and by day of the week, so use these numbers as a rough guide only. They come from the Korean site of HotelsCombined, a hotel price comparison service. The Myeongdong and Insadong pages were dated November 5, 2026, and the Itaewon page November 3, 2026. Dollar amounts assume about 1,400 won to the dollar.
| Area | What the data shows |
|---|---|
| Myeongdong | 272 places to stay; average about 299,000 won (about US$215) a night; a hostel listed from about 93,000 won (about US$65); cheapest month September (about 145,000 won), priciest July (about 539,000 won) |
| Insadong | Only 8 hotels listed; lowest listed rate about 129,000 won (about US$90); cheapest month June (about 129,000 won), priciest November (about 260,000 won) |
| Itaewon | 143 properties; guesthouses listed from about 58,000 won (about US$40); cheapest month March, priciest July |
| Hongdae, Gangnam | Not covered by these sources. Hongdae generally has more guesthouses and budget hotels, and Gangnam more international chains and luxury hotels |
Three patterns stand out. First, weekends cost more. In Myeongdong, Monday averaged about 210,000 won against about 335,000 won for Friday. In Itaewon, Saturday (about 252,000 won) cost roughly twice as much as Sunday (about 128,000 won). Second, July was the most expensive month in both Myeongdong and Itaewon. Third, Insadong's tiny supply means a few busy weeks can push rates up quickly there. Booking early and staying on weeknights are the most reliable ways to pay less.
Is Myeongdong the best area to stay in Seoul for first-timers?
For a first trip of three to five days, it usually is.
- Transport: Myeongdong Station is on Line 4, which goes directly to Seoul Station and Dongdaemun. Euljiro 1-ga Station, on the Line 2 loop, is a short walk away. Gyeongbokgung Palace, Namsan Seoul Tower and Dongdaemun are all easy to reach.
- Airport: Two limousine buses come straight from Incheon Airport, so you don't have to haul luggage through the subway. Bus 6001 serves Dongdaemun, Myeongdong, Seoul Station and Sinyongsan. Bus 6015 serves Myeongdong, Chungjeong-ro, Gongdeok and Mapo.
- Stays: Business hotels, international chains and hostels sit within a few blocks of each other.
- Daily life: You'll find cosmetics shops, street food stalls in the evening, currency exchange booths and Myeongdong Cathedral. Many shops offer instant tax refunds, and our tax refund guide explains how they work.
Downsides: Myeongdong is crowded and commercial, and the main street can feel like an outdoor mall. Restaurants aimed at tourists can be poor value. Walk a few streets toward Euljiro and you'll usually eat better for less.
Is Hongdae a good place to stay?
Hongdae is the area around Hongik University Station. It is Seoul's youth and indie-music district, with buskers, clubs, live music bars, cafes and vintage shops.
- Airport: Hongik Univ. Station is a stop on the AREX All-Stop train from Incheon Airport, which makes Hongdae one of the cheapest and easiest areas to reach from the airport. The AREX Express runs nonstop between the airport and Seoul Station, so it does not stop here. Limousine bus 6002 and night bus N6002 also serve Hongdae.
- Price: Rooms are usually cheaper than in Myeongdong or Gangnam, and there are plenty of guesthouses.
- Nearby: You can walk to the cafes of Yeonnam-dong and to Gyeongui Line Forest Park. Sinchon and Ewha Womans University are one or two stops away.
Downsides: On Friday and Saturday nights the streets stay loud until the early hours. Light sleepers should book on a side street or ask for a high floor. The palaces and Gangnam take a good while to reach by subway.
Why stay in Insadong or Jongno?
If history is the point of your trip, Insadong and nearby Jongno put you within walking distance of Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces, Bukchon Hanok Village, the hanok alleys of Ikseon-dong and Cheonggyecheon Stream. This is also the most likely place to find a hanok guesthouse, which is a stay in a traditional Korean house. Expect floor mattresses, and the bathrooms are often shared or small.
- Stations: Most people use Anguk (Line 3). Jongno 3-ga (Lines 1, 3 and 5) and Jonggak (Line 1) are also close.
- Atmosphere: By day there are galleries, tea houses and craft shops. Once the shops shut in the evening, the streets go quiet.
Downsides: Large hotels are few. Only eight Insadong hotels appeared in the price data, so the good rooms go early. Nightlife is limited, but the street-food tent bars around Jongno 3-ga and the bars of Euljiro are close by.
Is Gangnam worth staying in?
Gangnam makes sense if most of your plans are in southern Seoul. That includes business meetings, COEX and Starfield Library, Garosu-gil, the luxury boutiques of Apgujeong and Cheongdam, K-pop agency areas, and medical or beauty clinics.
- Stations: Gangnam Station is on Line 2 and the Sinbundang Line. Samseong Station on Line 2 serves COEX.
- Stays: International chains and luxury hotels, along with good-value business hotels.
Downsides: Most of the classic sights, including the palaces, Insadong and Myeongdong, are north of the Han River and take a fair amount of time to reach. Taxis crossing the river get stuck in rush-hour traffic. For a first trip, many visitors find Gangnam less atmospheric, and a day visit is often enough.
What is Itaewon like to stay in?
Itaewon, on Line 6, is Seoul's most international neighborhood. It has food from many countries, craft beer and cocktail bars, and Seoul Central Mosque on the hill. Neighboring Hannam-dong adds design shops and galleries, while Haebangchon and Gyeongnidan have small independent restaurants.
Downsides: The streets are very steep, so pulling a suitcase up a side street is hard work. Book close to Itaewon or Noksapyeong Station. The streets near the bar alleys are loud on weekends. Line 6 doesn't reach the main sights, so expect to change trains at least once for the palaces or Myeongdong.
How to choose: a step-by-step method
- Map your must-sees. Pin the three or four places you most want to visit. If most of them are north of the river, Gangnam is probably the wrong base.
- Plan your arrival. If you land late with heavy bags, pick an area with a direct airport bus or the AREX, such as Myeongdong or Hongdae. Our Incheon Airport to Seoul guide compares the options.
- Decide how you'll spend your evenings. For nightlife, choose Hongdae or Itaewon. For early nights, choose Insadong or Myeongdong.
- Check the walk to the station. In a subway city, a hotel eight minutes from an exit beats a cheaper one 20 minutes away up a hill. Look up the exit number in Naver Map or Kakao Map. Our map app guide explains why Google Maps falls short in Korea.
- Read recent reviews for room size and noise. Business-hotel rooms in Seoul are often small, and some budget rooms have no window.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Booking by district name alone. Gangnam-gu, Jung-gu and Mapo-gu are big districts. A listing labeled Gangnam can be a long bus ride from Gangnam Station.
- Forgetting the hills. Itaewon, Haebangchon and the parts of Myeongdong near Namsan are steep.
- Expecting Google Maps to navigate for you. Its walking and driving directions are limited in Korea, so use Naver Map or Kakao Map.
- Booking Hongdae when sleep matters most. The weekend noise is real.
- Not checking check-in times. Many hotels don't let you into your room until mid-afternoon. Most will store your bags if you arrive early, but confirm with your hotel.
Good to know
- Staying near Seoul Station is a practical alternative. It is the end of the line for the AREX Express and the main KTX station for day trips to Busan or Gyeongju. AREX added four Express runs a day from October 23, 2026, all between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.
- A T-money card pays for subways and buses and is accepted in convenience stores. Buy one when you arrive.
- Hanok guesthouses usually have shoes-off floors and floor bedding. If you need a Western bed, check the listing.
- If you need step-free access, look up which exit has an elevator in Naver Map. Not every exit has one.
FAQ
What is the best area to stay in Seoul for a first visit?
Myeongdong suits most first-timers. It is central, has direct airport buses and offers the widest choice of hotels. If palaces and quiet evenings matter more, Insadong or Jongno is a strong alternative. Budget travelers and night owls tend to prefer Hongdae.
Is it better to stay in Gangnam or Myeongdong?
For sightseeing, Myeongdong is better because it is closer to the palaces, Namsan and the old city. Gangnam is better if your plans are in southern Seoul, such as COEX, business meetings or clinics. Many visitors stay north of the river and visit Gangnam for a day.
Which Seoul neighborhood is cheapest to stay in?
Hongdae and Itaewon usually have the cheapest beds because they have many guesthouses. In early November 2026, some Itaewon guesthouses were listed from about 58,000 won a night. Staying on weeknights and avoiding July usually saves you more than switching neighborhoods.
Is Hongdae too noisy to stay in?
The streets near the clubs and live music bars are loud late on Fridays and Saturdays. Hotels a few blocks away, toward Yeonnam-dong or Hapjeong, are much quieter and still close to the action. Ask for a high floor away from the street.
Is Itaewon safe to stay in?
Like most of Seoul, Itaewon is generally safe and very used to foreign visitors. The main issues are weekend crowds near the bar streets and the steep hills. Stay close to a station and avoid the most packed alleys on big holiday nights.
