For most first-time visitors, the best area to stay in Seoul is Myeongdong. It is in the middle of the old city, it has a huge range of hotels, and a direct airport bus stops there. Pick Hongdae if you want nightlife and cheaper beds. Pick Insadong for palaces and hanok lanes, Gangnam for business trips and modern Seoul, and Itaewon for international food and bars.

Seoul is a big city. A good base can save you an hour of travel every day, so it is worth deciding before you book. Below, we compare the five classic neighborhoods on location, transport, price, noise and the kind of traveler each one suits.

Quick comparison: which Seoul neighborhood suits you?

Area Main station(s) Best for Downsides
Myeongdong Myeongdong (Line 4), Euljiro 1-ga (Line 2) First trip, shopping, central sightseeing Crowded, touristy, quiet late at night
Hongdae Hongik Univ. (Line 2, AREX, Gyeongui-Jungang) Nightlife, young travelers, budget Farther from palaces, loud on weekends
Insadong Anguk (Line 3), Jongno 3-ga (Lines 1, 3, 5) Palaces, culture, hanok stays Fewer large hotels, early nights
Gangnam Gangnam (Line 2, Sinbundang), Sinnonsa, Sinsa Business, K-beauty clinics, modern Seoul Long rides to the old city
Itaewon Itaewon (Line 6), Noksapyeong (Line 6) International food, bars, longer stays Hilly, Line 6 makes transfers slower

Is Myeongdong the best area to stay in Seoul for a first visit?

For most people, yes. Myeongdong lies between Namsan Tower, Namdaemun Market, City Hall and the palace district, and Gyeongbokgung, Insadong and Dongdaemun are all a short taxi or subway ride away. Line 4 goes directly to Seoul Station and to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, and you can walk to Euljiro 1-ga on Line 2.

Why people like it

  • More hotels than anywhere else in the city, from hostels to international chains
  • Street food stalls, cosmetics shops and currency exchange booths on almost every block
  • Airport limousine bus 6001 stops at Myeongdong Station and at several hotels in and around the area

What to watch out for

  • Daytime crowds are intense, and the area caters mainly to tourists
  • The streets empty out in the evening as many shops close, so for nightlife you will probably take a taxi to another district
  • Rooms cost more than in the cheapest areas. On the price-comparison site HotelsCombined, Myeongdong had an average rate of 299,404 won (about $210) a night. The cheapest headline listing was 93,132 won (about $65), at a hostel. The site lists September as the cheapest month and July as the most expensive (data updated November 5, 2026)

Is Hongdae a good place to stay?

Hongdae is the district around Hongik University in Mapo-gu. It is Seoul's center for street performers, indie music and clubs, with lots of cafés, vintage shops and bars that stay open late. It is a good fit if you are young, traveling on a budget or planning to stay out past midnight.

Transport is one of its biggest advantages. Hongik Univ. Station is on Line 2, the all-stop AREX airport train and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, so you can get to Incheon Airport without changing trains. Limousine bus 6002 also has a stop at Hongik Univ. Station by the Mercure and L7 hotels. Our Incheon Airport to Seoul guide covers every option.

The downsides: the palaces and Myeongdong are a longer ride away than from the central districts, and Friday and Saturday nights get loud near the main streets. Hostels and small guesthouses make Hongdae one of the cheapest places to stay. The lowest headline rate on HotelsCombined's Hongdae page was 17,450 won (about $12) a night, at a guesthouse (data updated November 4, 2026). Hapjeong and Mangwon are a stop or two away. They are quieter, and you can still walk into Hongdae.

Why stay in Insadong or nearby Bukchon?

If history is the reason for your trip, stay in Jongno around Insadong. You can walk to Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Bukchon Hanok Village, Ikseon-dong and Jogyesa temple. It is also the best area for a hanok guesthouse, which is a traditional Korean house with heated floors (ondol).

A cozy hanok guesthouse courtyard with tiled roofs, paper doors and a folded floor mattress inside a warm ondol room.

  • Stations: Anguk (Line 3, exit 6 for Insadong-gil) and Jongno 3-ga (Lines 1, 3, 5)
  • Prices: Mid-range. The lowest headline rate on HotelsCombined's Insadong page was 128,739 won (about $90) a night, at a three-star hotel. The site lists June as the cheapest month and November as the most expensive (data updated November 5, 2026)
  • Downsides: There are fewer big hotels, and galleries and craft shops close in the evening. Hanok rooms are often small, and many share bathrooms. In some you sleep on a mattress on the floor, so read the listing carefully

Is Gangnam worth staying in as a tourist?

Gangnam, south of the Han River, is the modern side of Seoul. It has wide avenues and office towers, the COEX mall with Starfield Library, Garosu-gil in Sinsa, and the boutiques of Apgujeong and Cheongdam. It suits business travelers, people going to dermatology or cosmetic clinics, and anyone with an event at COEX.

For sightseeing it is less convenient. The palaces, Insadong and Myeongdong are on the other side of the river, and the subway rides add up over several days. Taxis crossing the river are slow at rush hour. Hotels here are usually newer and larger, and more of them are upscale brands. Gangnam Station is a big hub on Line 2 and the Sinbundang Line, which also runs south to Pangyo.

What is Itaewon like to stay in?

Itaewon, in Yongsan-gu, is Seoul's most international neighborhood. You will find Middle Eastern, Indian, Mexican and European restaurants, Seoul's central mosque and a big bar scene. Nearby Gyeongridan-gil and Haebangchon have independent cafés and restaurants and a calmer, residential feel that works well for longer stays and remote workers.

  • Stations: Itaewon and Noksapyeong, both on Line 6, so you will often need to change lines to get elsewhere
  • Prices: A wide range. The lowest headline rate on HotelsCombined's Itaewon page was 57,723 won (about $40), at a guesthouse. The site lists March as the cheapest month and July as the most expensive (data updated November 3, 2026)
  • Downsides: Steep streets, not many large hotels, and loud weekend nights near the main road

How to choose: step by step

  1. List what you want to see. Palaces and markets point to Myeongdong or Insadong. Clubs and cafés point to Hongdae. COEX, clinics or work meetings point to Gangnam.
  2. Check the nearest station, not just the district name. A hotel listed "in Myeongdong" can still be a long uphill walk from the station. Enter the address in Naver Map or Kakao Map (see our map app guide) and check the walking time.
  3. Look for transfer stations. A hotel near two subway lines saves a lot of time. Good examples are Euljiro 1-ga/Myeongdong, Jongno 3-ga, Hongik Univ. and Gangnam/Sinnonsa.
  4. Plan your airport trip. If you land late with heavy bags, choose a hotel on a direct limousine bus route or near an AREX station.
  5. Compare the full cost, not only the room rate. A cheap room far from everything can end up costing more once you add travel time and taxi fares.

How much does it cost to get around from each area?

The adult base subway fare in the Seoul metropolitan area has been 1,550 won (about $1.10) with a transit card since June 28, 2025. The same fare applies on the Incheon, Gyeonggi and Korail lines in the area, and longer trips cost a little more. A T-money card works on the subway, on buses and in many taxis. Our T-money card guide explains how to buy and top one up, and our Seoul subway guide explains transfers.

Airport limousine bus 6001 runs between Dongdaemun and Myeongdong and stops at Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, Myeongdong Station and Seoul Station. Bus 6002 runs between Cheongnyangni and Hongdae and stops along Jongno and at Sinchon, Hongik Univ. and Hapjeong. Both cost 17,000 won (about $12) for adults and 12,000 won for children (elementary school students) each way, according to the operator's website as of November 6, 2026. Seats are first come, first served. You cannot book online, and you pay with a transit card or cash.

Good to know

  • Rooms are small in mid-range city hotels, especially in Myeongdong and Hongdae. If you have large suitcases, check the room size in square meters before you book.
  • "Residences" and serviced apartments are common in Gangnam and around City Hall. They are good value for families and for stays of a week or more.
  • Prices change a lot through the year. Cherry blossom season, autumn foliage, big K-pop concerts and long Korean holidays (Seollal and Chuseok) push rates up. The cheapest month differs by neighborhood, so compare dates before you commit.
  • Watch out for hills. Parts of Itaewon and Haebangchon, and the edges of Myeongdong toward Namsan, are steep, which is hard work with luggage.
  • Late-night food is easiest to find in Hongdae, Itaewon and around Gangnam Station. Myeongdong gets quiet earlier than many visitors expect.
  • Tax refunds: Hotel areas, Myeongdong especially, have many shops that give instant tax refunds on purchases. See our tax refund guide.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Seoul for first-timers?

Myeongdong is the safest choice. It is central, has the widest choice of hotels and is on a direct airport bus route. If history and quieter evenings matter more to you, Insadong and the rest of Jongno are an excellent alternative.

Which area of Seoul is best for nightlife?

Hongdae is the main area for clubs, live music and late-night bars, especially on weekends. Itaewon comes second, with more international bars and restaurants. Gangnam has upscale lounges and clubs, but a night out there costs more.

Is it better to stay in Gangnam or Myeongdong?

For sightseeing, choose Myeongdong, because most palaces, markets and old-city sights are close by. Choose Gangnam if your plans are mostly COEX, clinics, business meetings or shopping south of the river.

Is Hongdae too far from the main sights?

Not really. Line 2 runs directly from Hongdae to City Hall and Euljiro without a transfer, but you will be making that trip most days. If the palaces are your top priority, you will spend less time commuting from Myeongdong or Insadong.

Where should families stay in Seoul?

Families often do well around Myeongdong and City Hall, or in a serviced apartment in Gangnam. These options tend to have bigger rooms, and taxis and food are easy to find. Avoid staying right on Hongdae's main streets on weekends because of the noise.
